Smoke Daddy’s Review of RJ Barbecue

Smoke Daddy’s Review of RJ Barbecue

The potato salad and peach cobbler were outstanding, followed closely by the rib.  Beans and sauce were also very good.  And, although we didn’t try them, the Fish & Chips looked awesome.

MAIN FARE:RJ Spread

  • Brisket – Good color, moisture, texture, and tenderness.  Nice smoke ring, but bitter.
  • Rib – Moist & tender.  Pulls easily from the bone.  Not overly greasy… a good rib!  2nd rib has a touch of bitterness in the bark – but still a very good rib.
  • Sausage – Commercial taste & consistency, with a bit of spice on the finish.
  • Note: meats served "sauced" by default

OTHER FARE:

  • Beans – Excellent flavor.  Very good.RJ Staff
  • Potato Salad – Mustard-based, mashed style, with dill pickle and cayenne pepper.  Outstanding.
  • Peach Cobbler – Homemade & excellent!  I would consider it more of a peach crisp…

ATMOSPHERE:

  • Pad site on the corner of Byrant & 14th.  An old Popeyes or some such?
  • 3 years here, and 3 years on MLK prior
  • Smokehouse is screened enclosure next to main buildingRJ RJ
  • Drive-through
  • Simple, open dining room with sparse decor
  • Women run the front of the house and make sides and desserts
  • Charles is the prototypical "sullen man with a squint" as referenced by Calvin Trillin
  • Friday is Fish Day, and the fish & chips look awesome!
